shin splints, supplements and calcium

Postby anarchofighter » Sun Mar 19, 2006 11:28 pm

i train in thaiboxing and ive developed shin splints mainly due to alot of jumproping, movement on the balls of my feet, and kicking heavy bags(in thaiboxing you strike with your shin)

I was wondering if anyone had knowledge on supplements to prevent shin splints or other preventivie measures (right now i wrap them before exercise, and run coldwater on them and ice after exercies). specidifically would more calcium or magniesium be benificial in preventing shin splints. Also from striking with your shin you build up calicum deposist in your shin as they toughen up i though calcium/magniesium might be benificial for that as well.

vegans often lack calcium in the diet right?

ive been debating taking some suppmlement for calcium/ joints any way. any suggestions ideas?

i think ill post ot eh supplemt section as well
thanks

No worries, wasnt too easy to decide which of the subforums was most suitable for this :).

I think it's more about training than suplements. It's commen injury for athletes. Sprinters usually run trough the pain distance runners recouver by running on grass and start with short intensive intervals.

It took me 6 to 7 weeks to get over it

good luck

i know it sounds funny, but we do something called "duck walking" where you walk around on your heals, this helps strengthen the muscles in the front of the leg. also stretching (<--very important) and taking it a bit easier can do wonders
A vegan marathoner, are you crazy? Nope, not crazy, just healthy.
