Hip rotation (squat question).

I have a medical complex history with my left hip. Without going into it I will say that it has been suggested by consultants that I have decreased left hip joint space.

When I stand, and bring my right knee up, it comes up fine. However, if the left comes up it starts to externally rotate, ending up looking something like this girl's (although she is sitting down).

This means if I squat, my hip joint locks out very quickly, but my right hip continues to go down, tilting my pelvis and bending my spine.

The same rotation problem happens on a rower or cycle.

I am under a consultant at the moment and did mention this last time i saw him, although he did not say much. I am considering going to a phsyio privately to see what they say. Consultants have said that i have lack of internal rotation.

I think it is most likely the hip joint, in which case, only surgery, i imagine, would fix this. However I do have weaker hip muscles around the left hip so wonder if it could be this.

The thing is it poses a real problem as it means I can't lift things safely very easily as whatever I'm picking up, if im pending both legs simulateously, im stressing my spine.

Any thoughts on what the cause of this could be are welcome. Like I say, I think its the joint.

Doesn't sound like something that could be diagnosed over the internet, at least without a video. :wink:

If it was me personally (and this is probably bad, potentially dangerous advice), I would be tempted to start a very easy slow strength gaining program and see what happens. It might make it worse but then you have a better idea of what the problem is. ie start with a body weight stuff, go up to a broom stick then a 20kg bar. If anything gets sore or if your form is bad stop. It's not worth messing up your back.

Maybe when you see the consultant you can be direct with him and just say what exercises can I do to strengthen it? From your description I can kind of understand what you mean, but maybe a video would make it clearer. What happens when you do single leg stuff?

A decent pyshio should be able to give you exercises to work around just about any issue, so good investment if you really want to train.

Pretty much impossible to say what the cause is without doing a thorough assessment - so I reckon a good physio is your best bet. Consultants are usually a bit too keen to recommend surgery as a solution (if the only tool you have is a hammer, etc...)

Tried doing some box jump kinda things, and my right side of my pelvis hurt next day, probably because of this problem. Think it needs a physio tbh.
