heal cuts faster?

Postby V VII Hero » Sun Jul 18, 2004 11:00 pm

I have a huge gash on my forehead. I cant afford stitches. I am using butterfly bandaides to keep in together. I need it to heal as fast as it possibly can. I know I had a thread similar to this before. besides vitamin E to reduce scarring...what can be used to help close a wound?

Jesus, what did you do this time? Hope you are okay! Afraid I can't think of anything to help though, apart from suggesting you don't run head first into walls? Or something...

Head wounds often look worse than they are, as you bleed more from your head. It might heal up better than you think, but

Erk! Look after yourself! We want no more lacerations on our future body building champ.

And fucks sake (sorry to swear) I know I slag off the NHS, but what kind of a country is it where you have to PAY for STITCHES!

If you keep having accidents, come live in England. You might get flesh eating bacteria in our hospitals, but at least you don't have to pay for the damned privelege.

Dental floss, and the smallest sewing needle you can find.

No, not really.

I've seen it done in a couple skate videos, though.

Actually, I think you can buy some kind of "glue"-like stuff that'll seal up a wound like that. Come to think of it, though, it's probably not vegan...

I second that! Paying for stitches is insane!  The sad thing is, given the growth in conservatism, Australia is heading down that repressive path (not that Australia has ever been an egalitarian country - when anybody finds an egalitarian country please tell me!)

Wound healing

Postby Oak » Mon Jul 19, 2004 8:46 am

Hey V VII hero,

The most important thing is to keep the wound together at all means - this means no frowning
Wounds heal faster if the have a good blood supply, this often means not letting the area get cold. Unfortunetly foreheads are not known for thier good blood supply :(
Yes, moisturiser to stop the wound scarring is also essential.

As long as you have a good diet you'll heal as fast as you can, Wounds more than weightlifting use up protein, but you should have enough for the job? If you are worried about protein maybe eat a few more nuts?

Mary, There are at least a couple vegan flosses:

Here are two: The EcoDent and the second listed, VegeWax: http://www.differentdaisy.com/nexternal ... -dent-.htm

Pure Aloe is good for wounds that are in the process of healing.

Five sovereign fingers taxed the breath,
Doubled the globe of dead and halved a country;
These five kings did a king to death."

oooo...sorry to hear about your forehead! I actually lacerated my palm a few weeks ago. By the time I decided to go to the doc, it was too late to get stitches. They did the butterfly bandage thing on me and it worked. Granted, I did smash my palm by closing the lid on something and it reopened it! but 3 weeks later and it's almost healed. It's still tender though. It does look like I'll have some scarring though. but - Shea butter, pure aloe and vitamin E do work wonders on scars.

oh, I also noticed that the more I let it breathe, the more quickly it healed.

I'd keep the butterfly bandages in place, but consider keeping any other type of bandage off of it from time to time.

Gee, that's terrible. I've never heard of people doing that before (video-taping beating someone up). I guess I can imagine that some people would be twisted enough to find that amusing, and that's really sad. I think it's great that you helped someone the way you did. I wish more people would follow your example. It's just too bad that you had to be so injured in the process. I hope you heal soon!

I am so sorry that nobody else helped out. If everybody did what you had done, or even a small minority of people, then you would have defused the violence of that stupid situation. People are so stupid!

Anyway, the hero part of your name makes total sense now. :D Okay, you got yourself hurt, but at least you stand for what you believe in, and you may have distracted these bastards long enough to have saved the other victim. Not much comfort as your head hurts, but still...

Vegans are more likely to stand up for their beliefs I find, because you do so with every meal. You constantly affirm to yourself that you can and will make a difference. Mealtimes aren't as dramatic as what you did, but it is part of the same way of thinking. Sorry you are hurt, but glad to know that you are an ethical individual through and through, and a damned sight braver than most people.

Ugh

Postby ctchrinthry » Tue Jul 20, 2004 4:20 pm

Well, it's probably too late, but youy really ought to get it sewn up if you can. The emergency room will sew up facial scars and bill you, because it's "emergency care." But there's a huge difference in cost, and i think even a cheap hospital will charge $200 or more. And they often will initiate collections of you if you don't pay it fairly soon, though a few stitches might not earn this.

I've broken up fights myself, fortunately i didn't get messed up, but it's a dangerous task. One of the people i "rescued" ended up being such a choade, i wished i hadn't bothered. The few times i've been in trouble, no one lifted a finger.

If the wound is closed already, supposedly, breaking open a vitamin E caplet and rubbing the oil onto the wound directly will help it heal more completely. Honey is a remedy, but i suppose sugar in general would work as well.

As for paying for medical care, a lot of the population here pictures "socialized medical care" leading to huge lines and poor care, vis-a-vis the supposed toilet paper lines in the USSR.
At this or that twist of it I feel my slippery self eluding me, gliding into deeper and darker waters than I care to probe.

We don't have to pay for our medical treatment here in Canada, which is one of the really nice things about living here. It's true, though, that you might have to wait a while for some things, in particular medical imaging procedures. I think it's worth it in the long run though to not have to pay out of pocket for each medical expense. If I'm sick I can go to the doctor and not worry about how I'm going to pay for it. I could never afford to have some of the care I've had if I did not live here. That's not to say we're without problems, but it's definitely fair (in my opinion) that poor people can get treatment instead of going without. I would hate to think of all the poorer people getting sicker & sicker without treatment and all the richer people glowing with health!

Of course, I realize I've just strayed from the topic at hand (I hope you're feeling better Hero & healing up well!), but I really wanted to give you my two cents worth on this issue! :)
