oww knee please help!?!

Postby Starla » Wed Aug 20, 2008 1:21 pm

hey guys-

so i hurt my knee about a week ago. im not sure if i just over worked it or what happened because i was new to running. I've been icing it and taking ibuprofen but it still hurts a lot. I'm wondering how long this *Should* hurt? And should i stay off it totally.. like no walks or anything? I just would think it would be getting better by now!
It hurts the most when i walk on it... bend it while standing up (ie putting my pants on haha) it's not terribly swollen but a little... mostly it's very sensitive.. if i just touch it it hurts....

any help??

Stop icing it. More than 48h after an injury, icing will do more harm than good. Equally complete rest is often counterproductive

But go see a doctor ASAP.

Really, really go and see a GP to find out what you've done. Diagnosis must be the starting point. Its a very complicated joint so dont ruin it by guessing and not treating it rigyht.

Good luck.

Go to your GP (and get a referal for a physical therapist or an expert).

I've got similar knee pains. From experimentation, I've found that most of it is the torque between my knee, my center of balance, and my leg movement. I've found what hurts less, and now I can actually run. But I look forward to my first PE appointment tomorrow, and to getting some birthday money to hire a running coach to look at my gait.

Unfortunately, throwing a little $$$ at the problem (unless you can get good advice from an experience running coach for free, and some support from an expert Physical therapist) might be a better long term solution than ice.

i disagree with all advice given so far.

my recommendation is to do some heavy squatting (on a Smith rack for safety) and see how it feels the next day. If it's not any worse, increase the weight by 80%.

That's totally irresponsible advice.

She should hammer a nail through the joint to keep it from rotating sideways. Preferably a long long nail so that it makes it all the way across. Not like this chump. ALL WRONG.
