different kind of neck pain

i think i'm probably in the market for a HTFU comment by posting this, but....

i'm finding that pretty much all strenuous activity is leaving my traps extremely sore, to the point where i don't have full range of motion in turning my head left and right.

this happens the next day after doing almost any upper body work.

being that i've only been exercising for a month or two after coming off a long layoff (years) is this just normal muscle stress that will work itself out once i'm more fit.

Or am I just an old man that should stick to tai-chi?

If you have the possibility to do so, I think it would be a good idea for you to have a physiotherapist (or similar) have a look at you when you lift heavy/work-out (you can do a few exercises just to show them). The reason for this is that you might be contracting the muscles in the neck/shoulder area without noticing it. I use to get lots of neck problems and stiff upper shoulders when I was a teenager, simply because I tensed up in those areas. Once I learned to relax and work the muscles properly, the problem disappeared.

It might be worth checking out at least.

I suspect tai-chi will be far too energetic for you.

What you need to do is buy a comfy chair (with some pointy cushions), a cardigan, and a pair of slippers.

pat attention to your neck and head position when you lift. you want to have the back of the neck lengthened, but without leaning the head forward. it is very common for people to move their head forward when under upper-body stress, because it tightens muscles (including the trapezius) that allow for greater tension and stabilization.

a common example of this is someone doing pushups and having their forehead touch the floor instead of the chest.
