High Protein and Low Carb food sources - other than tofu...

Postby malloryjade » Wed Nov 07, 2012 2:41 am

Hey all, sorry if this is a re-post of another discussion but I cbf trawling through the site so I'm hoping you can humour me.

What foods do you include in your diet as vegans that are high protein and low carb?
I'm talking as low carb as possible and high protein as possible

Currently my diet has a great amount of fat but the carb/protein ratio is backwards.. I'm getting about 60g of protein and around 120g of carbs. Not ideal considering I lift 3-4 times a week.

I don't want to have to rely on protein shakes to up my intake because I would like to think there is better quality nutrition to be obtained from plant sources when it comes to my quest for more protein.

Any advice would be siiiiiick! Thanks in advance :)

purely from a low carb angle: tempeh, seitan, tvp

but the real question is, why does it have to be low-carb?

you say you're getting a great amount of fat, do you mind if I ask how much that is? because both 120c/60p or 60c/120p are really very low.

Most nuts and seeds would work and you can even make a pseudo tofu out of seeds - http://forum.theppk.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2831

Or even out of leaves - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24075&start=0

But I find that for most goals, going really low carb isn't worth it. If you're doing any kind of endurance sport, it's going to make things really hard.

I'd also go for nuts and seeds + pea and rice protein powder + lots of veggies. If you plan it right it should be pretty low in carbs + do a carb up every 7-10 days.

Alternatively go for carb cycling which is probably a better alternative:

+ take a look at intermittent fast/renegade diet/carb-backloading.

For example: http://www.seanhyson.com/blog/the-reneg ... ackloading
Squat - 170kg
DL - 200kg
BP - 110kg
OHP - 75kg

You guys are boss. Thanks. Seems I'm pretty on point with the nuts and seeds. Even my trainer wants me on around 100g at least of carbs per day. Thanks :)
