Canned Tomatoes Without The Can

Postby beforewisdom » Wed Feb 01, 2012 5:41 pm

In the US there have been various reports that eating canned tomato products may not be so healthy as the acid in tomatoes releases some nasty chemicals used to line cans. The other big warning along that line is to stay away from non-organic root vegetables. I'm guessing, because they soak up the chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Well, it looks like there is an option for avoiding canned tomatoes and getting some convenience as well

My guess would be that they switched to cartons to save money on shipping costs. Paper is lighter than cans. An organic/healthy/politically correct iced tea brand in the US, "Honest T" started switching from glass bottles to plastic for the same reason.

I use to buy Pomi but now Eden makes organic jarred tomatoes so I buy them by the case when I can get a great deal on them.

I always buy the Trader Joe's no salt added in order to avoid BPA. I wish the TJ's diced tomatoes were in smaller chunks, but oh well. They're the only BPA-free tomatoes that are at all convenient for me to purchase.
