How much organic food do you have?

Postby knackers » Sat Mar 19, 2011 11:31 pm

I recently watched the documentary Monsanto, got severely pissed off and decided I would try and go 100 % organic.
Issues have been :

Affordability - Everything is so expensive. Costing me an average of AUS$300 per week....Fuck Monsanto!
Availability - Limited in what you can buy, less range.
Organic 'dealers' - I have to travel each week to stock up as the local 'dealers' want an arm and a leg for their gear.
Convenience - Lack of, have to plan everything even more so then with being vegan
Stress - Ok, I am not being poisoned by monsanto,...but the cortisol is killing me!
Favorite Recipes - Alot of good recipes are gone, some stuff you just cannot make as organic ingredients dont exist.

So, my question is. How many people on here (people who actually consume a healthy amount of calories) are actually between 80-100% organic.

Is it really achievable ?

You really just have to set aside a larger portion of your income for food. Organic prices have come down quite a bit here in Colorado USA, with about a 50% markup from conventional produce now...

I buy organic grains, legumes and soy products ( most of my calories ). Those things are only a little bit more in price in the U.S.. Organic fruits and vegetables go very high up in price. I buy organic produce when it is close in price. When it gets ridiculous, I don't.

I don't buy organic veg, but will soon start work on my new allotment, which will be organic.

If you don't have a garden or an allotment, you can grow a surprising amount of stuff in pots.

I buy as much organic as I possibly can, but there are some debates within the vegan-organic growing movement about whether organic is more or less vegan than conventional growing methods using less slaughterhouse and marine life by-products.

We buy organic when it's available and not more than twice the price of regular. But if it only comes in commercial, then we buy commercial. Monsanto is like the Evil Dark Lord of farming. What they are doing with seed and farmers is criminal.

A better metaphor would be to say that Monsanto is the Microsoft of agriculture.

Hmmm, perhaps. Only scarier.

Very little organic comes into my house. Organic carrots are very close in price to conventional, so I get them, other than that I'm a little tight for organic.

I agree with HF about growing stuff. I'm a very lazy gardener and have a small garden and two dogs so don't grow much but have been suprised how far a sprouting kit goes.

$300 a week sounds a crazy amount to be spending of food!!!

We buy organic sometimes, but it ends up being like %25 of the produce... but a bit more in things like soymilk. All of the soymilk/tofu we get is organic, non-GMO soy, and we eat a lot of soy.

Regardless, I'm usually more concerned about fair trade/union worker regarding foods, and organic for me is partially about buying foods that don't harm workers with pesticides.
Context is everything.

We get an organic veg box delivered from a local farm every couple of weeks. Though that's more about reducing food miles / supporting local business / avoiding supermarkets, not just the organic thing.
Plus it is more convenient than having to go into town for shopping. Though not sure exactly how the cost compares.
Its probably about half of the fruit and veg we eat.Don't really bother for most other things, though might buy organic soya milk, beans etc if its not too expensive.

Interesting stuff, I might start trying too grow something, I have 2 books on organic farming recently purchased so time to study up. In the meantime I've come to the conclusion that Im willing to sacrifice $300 out of my pay each week if it means Im not supporting the scumbag filth ridden life killing monsanto and co.
Also, a friend just lent me a dvd called food matters, and another one that I cnt remember the title of but sounded similar, so I suspect after I watch these it will harden my resolve to grow something. :)

You can join the vegan organic gardening facebook group :)

Food matters is a pretty crappy raw foodist/gerson therapy propaganda film based on the dodgy/made up information that the two groups seem to have an ample supply of. Best to avoid it.

We bought all our veggies and fruit, and grains organic until recently due to our local Organic shop having to close due to EQ damage.

I always grow a few crops, usually tomatos, garlic and zucchini's each year. Zucchini's are awesome especially if you get a good productive variety. 4 or 5plants and you're sorted. Forgot to pick them the last few days so they got a bit big, and picked twice as much as you'd buy in a week, just today.
