Need help from people who eat a LOT of calories

Postby chewybaws » Tue Feb 22, 2011 8:41 pm

I currently eat around 200g nuts/seeds, 125g oats, 1l soy milk, about 40ml of fatty oils, 3-5 servings of fruit, 4 scoops protein powder, 200g (when dry) grain, 2 tins of beans. Totals in about 4500+kcal most days, somtimes more. After the grain/beans meal I find it hard to eat any more, sometimes get bad indigestion. Packing all this food in has been pretty good for strength gains, but bad for the rest of my day. I don't feel that healthy right now and have to spend a lot of time eating. I'm only just maintaining my weight and some weeks gaining a tiny amount, don't even know how I'd add more weight. I already blend all my food except the beans/grain...and it seems to be that big meal that's the problem.

Been thinking of ways to replace it...but don't really want to be eating any more of any of the other foods.

Anyway I'll cut to the chase. I'm looking for answers from anyone who consistently have high calorie diets -What foods make up the bulk of your calories?

I used to make a drink that gave me most of my fat for the day, and about 1/3 to 1/4th of my total calories and it really helped when I just didn't feel like eating any more (which was often).

125 ml peanut butter
250 ml coconut milk (not the "lite" version)
500 ml fortified soy milk (can use almond or other milk if you don't like soy, but it wont be as calorie or nutritionally dense)
1 scoop pea protein
30 ml agave nectar

All told that gives you:

1600 calories
114g fat
50g carbs
82g protein

You can play around, too--add more of one, take away some of another. If you're eating a lot of nuts, you really will want to watch your fat intake as the PB and CC milk are super high in fat.

I would also try and replace a lot of the grains you're eating with fruits, rice and/or yams. I used to eat a half pound of pasta a day as my primary carb source, and I had the same feeling you do but don't anymore, at all.

Not sure this will help, but I've been playing around with calorie dense recipies for 'cake' to take on long runs. Soaked dates, ground seeds, avocados, oats and raisins can be easily mixed together to make a fairly tasty high calorie lump. I don't have the stats KC Masterpiece has for his drink (I'm impressed!) but all ingredients are carbo-dense.

Fruit juice also has loads of carbs and if I'm carbo-loading that's just as effective as grains.

You seem to have designed your diet to cause nausea. After fatty oils, nuts and protein powder I'd struggle to keep anything down.

I would forget all the neurotic advice you gleaned from VBB and form a healthy relationship with your food. Maybe the odd thing that tastes nice.

Agreed. Totally.

If you're bulking, you just need to make sure you hit whatever macros you decide upon. 500g of carbs can come from rice/pasta, or from sugar... basically it doesn't matter how you get to 500g. Same thing goes for fat/protein.

Provided you get sufficient vitamins/minerals from your food, you should not fear adding (some) processed stuff into your diet. After all, you are bulking, it should be enjoyable and you won't be bulking forever.

Have you tried Pringles?

co-op doughnuts?

Also, jus-roll frozen pastry. Smear with meridean pesto, chuck some pine-nuts on there and roll into a sort of swiss roll thing. Cut into 1-inch slices and bake for 20mins. Snack on throughout day.

the annoying thing is i sparsely do cardio, just 3 muscle workouts a week and barely ever sweat during them.

Thanks for all the responses guys, after the comp definitely getting a bit of processed foods in there and definitely more sugar. It will be easier to eat and will be able to get more veg in with my dinner, will be a good tradeoff.

A real bad idea for me. Once I pop I can't stop. And since I do my shopping for the week at a time, percentage of my diet taken up by pringles would be catastrophic.

Planning an all day breakfast for after my comp on saturday, thinking some fake sausages/bacon, scrambled tofu, baked beans, tomatoes, plenty of mushrooms and some toast. Good way to break into my new diet!

Isn't that the point? Get 'em down ya lad!

Also, comp breakfast sounds tasty, but watch out for eating too much on the day. Comp nerves make me nauseous and you could do without that on the day right? Better to have a decent, but moderate BF, and then graze throughout the day I reckon.
