ive kinda just avoided going out for pizza with friends in college, but since i moved after college back to my hometown people i know love to go to pizza places. so besides just getting a salad do you guys have any ideas about pizza? perhaps the pizza without cheese? if you guys have done this got any good topping ideas?

Couple of tips from someone who used to work in the industry... if you're going to order pizza without the cheese (which a lot of people do), ask for extra sauce to avoid the pizza drying out, and tell them you're lactose intolerant as a way of ensuring they cut the pizza with a clean cutter.

An urban myth amongst Vegans here in Sweden is that some pizza places put eggs in the dough, so I always ask for that, but I've never come across it! But Pizza without cheese is somewhat of a classic, extra sauce is a good tip, If they have falafel, you can always ask to get some tahini sauce on the side (on the other hand then you could order a falafel and don't have to worry.. )

I'm not a big pizza fan but I have to echo what has already been stated. Pizza without the cheese is the way to go.

Just make sure you only eat pizzas in Italian restaurants, not American-style pizzas from cheap fast food places. Then you can ensure that your pizza is made to order and you can specify what goes on top. I find it easy to get olive oil drizzled over a pizza with tomato sauce, roast vegetables and rocket.

I ask for capers and some extra olive oil, or a veggie "calzone" without cheese!

have to say, having sampled many places with advertised "vegan pizzas", i much prefer some cheap ass bulk buy chain with just veg pizza without cheese, and then top it up from the salad table.

In finland pizza chain Rax is my favourite for this

On a trip to South Africa, I asked for a pizza without cheese and was offered avocado on top as an alternative. This was surprisingly good - they didn't cook the avocado with the other toppings but put it on fresh at the end.

I love pizza! I get it loaded (they call it veggie lovers). Like mentioned above, drop the cheese and get extra sauce. The only thing I have had to watch for is, some places will have a non-vegan crust or sauce (usually cheese in the sauce and whey in the crust). I have my favorite places who do a full vegan pizza, yum.

I have yet to come across that in an Italian place.

There's a takeaway place down in London does tons of vegan toppings - fake meats, cheeses. Great find.

Or so we thought, till we phoned them up and it turns out none of their bases are vegan and there's nothing we can order from there.

I've found 3 that put whole cream in the crust. It's always best to ask. The chain places are actually the ones I've had the most luck with.

When I was living in NYC, I used to go to a vegan friendly bakery/pizzeria (Sullivan Street Bakery) that served cheese less pizza with absolutely no dairy or egg products whatsoever. Topped on the pizza were black olives and occasionally mushrooms. Now that I'm living in Indiana, it's so hard to find vegan friendly pizza that's both affordable and delicious. I highly recommend Sullivan Street if you have to be in the NYC area. Absolutely amazing!

Have a great place n Virginia that makes pie on Whole wheat dough - that has 4-14 veggies Yumm and also uses crumbled Tofu.
REALLY good

Most (all i think) Z pizza chains do two types of vegan pizza now. Soy cheese (meh) or daiya cheese (awesome stuff and non soy). They get very confused about their cheese so you have to say Daiya and slowly. Otherwise they will give you the soy.

Expensive but very nice. Wholefoods and Ralphs all sell Daiya now so you can also make your own.

Daiya = finally a decent hard vegan cheese and non soy!

every week a new pizza place starts to use daiya. Add them on fb or have a look at the website.
