yeah, pretty much anything that has soy protein isolate in it runs the risk of including minute amounts of hexane. Every now and again, it's probably on a par with the health risks of eating mercury in fish. It's just another reason to stick to seitan, tofu and tempeh as analogues IMHO

It is sadness. Not even vegan foods are free from toxic stuff. ~_~

You're typing on a computer, you will be living within a dozen miles of some kinda road, I'm guessing you visit an office that has air-con. All of these present your body with toxins to process. It can deal with them if you're not silly about it. Bodies are awesome.

Hexane smells nice.

By the accounts given in "**** in food is toxic! avoid it or die!" type articles, given the concentrations, routes of exposure and frequency of exposure, people who are exposed to these compounds at much higher levels are surely in the shite.

But having said that, I've noticed a small but not insignificant trend for lab workers (especially chemists) to make it into their 80s and 90s. And still be active scientists.

On the flipside, people get worked up about acrylamide in fatty foods as a dreadful carcinogen for example. The exposure (although potentially frequent) is to trace quantities - micrograms at best. Compare and contrast with a suicide attempt I know of where a postdoctoral researcher in biochemistry decided to top himself by drinking a bottle of the stuff - some 500 mL 40% acrylamide in all - and suffered absolutely no ill effects in the (short and medium term at least) - much to his consternation. If he'd gone for the bleach based disinfectant instead he would be dead in about three days after a very agonizing death.

So yeah, always a little sceptical of these things.

Just found this article about hexane in veggie burgers and the spurious science behind its supposed dangers. Conclusion: It's okay keep eating veggie burgers.
