Yes. It's pretty much central to the definition of "phenotype", Ava.

Now, by either genetic manipulation (and the right host- expression vector systems exist for Propionibacterium) or if you have an even greater amount of patience, you can modify strains to express the right genes at the right time to increase their usefulness. Virtually every industrial bioprocess from vaccine manufacture to food and drug production has involved some level of strain modification.

Penicillium sp. for example, never produce industrially viable quantities of penicillin, yet the strains in use now produce 300,000 times the amount of penicillin they initially did.

So it's not outside the realms of possibility :wink:
