trek 1000 or trek 1200?

Hi, am looking to get into cycling properly and yesterday started looking at bikes. The guy in the shop seemed to really know what he was talking about but i was hoping to get some impartial advice here. The 2 bikes it came down to in the end were a new trek 1000 and a secondhand really low mileage trek 1200, both at about €670-€700 which is about how much i want to spend at the moment. So any advice? I dont really understand the technical jargon as to why the 1200 is higher spec, I've never riden a racer before and the only experience i have with cycling is mountain biking country roads etc... Is there anything i should be looking for specifically or at this level does it really not matter that much? i.e should i just chill and go with whichever looks nicer?

well that kinda depends on you, they both look pretty similar, you want it for racing? just outline you needs to your local guy and if he's a local buisness like mine then he'll point out the best deal to you, other than that i cant really see any difference.
make sure its the right size and you like the bike tho.

I'd go for the 1200, since it has slightly better specs. but the most important thing is of course to get one that is your correct size, and get handlebars that also match your shoulder width, that's way more important than getting slightly better components.

is the service deal the same for both bikes? do they leave a guarantee for the used bike? have they done a complete overhaul of the used bike so everything is in order?

Yeah, the fit is good on both, i've decided to go for the 1200 seems better value, collecting it tomorrow can't wait!

just to make sure, when you say "fits good on both", have someone looked at your bike position, made sure that the width of the handlebar, length of the bike (top tube+stem) and the height is correct for your measurements? this is more important on a road bike than on a MTB, and it's best to get these right from the beginning.

a good place to get some default values for bike fit is Wrench Science (click on road and then on fit system, apparently you need to create a user name, but after that you input your measurements and you get some values to start with)

i think they have the same frame but the 1200 has a little higher quality parts than the 1000. I have a 1500 which is basically the same thing just with different parts and i love it so whichever you buy.
