Geared to SS conversion?

Postby Nikko » Sat Jul 21, 2012 6:32 am

Has anyone here ever done a single speed conversion on a Giant STP? I went for a ride today and realised that DJ with gears is not so great. I was going to buy a new rim, hub and cassette but I've also seen some conversions where people have just removed all but one sprocket from their existing cassette. Is this worth it? If so anyone care to take me through the process?

Shouldn't need to buy a new wheel. And no need for a cassette if its singlespeed.

You will need a cog (sprocket), plus some spacers to get the sprocket in the right place on the hub. You might be able to dismantle your cassette and use a sprocket from that. But I think its probably best to get a new singlespeed cog. As it should be stronger, less worn out, better at holding the chain on, and less likely to damage the hub etc.
You can buy a conversion kit, which includes a cog or two plus a few spacers, eg ... elID=17776

You will also need some way of tensioning the chain. I'm not sure what of dropouts that Giant has - if they are horizontal, then you can move the wheel back to get the chain tight enough. Otherwise, you will need some sort of tensioner. You could use your derailleur, but its probably best to use a proper tensioner, eg ... _tensioner

That sprocket is very thin and will chew in to the freehub body, especially if it's aluminium.
They do a wider one which is much better. ... -223-p.asp
