Something more like this is used:

It's a power meter. There are a few different kinds but they all have some amount of strain gauges that are strategically placed (rear hub, cranks, spindle, pedal) that measure torque which is converted to watts. The biggest problem is they are expensive! So you've gotta be rather motivated to get one. Which one you get usually comes down to budget, but there are trade-offs based on how it is set up - such as Power Tap is in the wheel, so you always must use that wheel if you want power; however it is easily changed between bikes. SRM is in the crankset so its difficult to move from a bike, but you can use any wheels.

[quote="Ombah"]I guess you use something like this to get the numbers?

Or do you use bigger things? What should you look for when you want watt mesurement?

yes, powertaps don't build the lightest wheels, but they're worth it!! With a reasonable rim, they are not out-of-control-heavy by any means.

This is another option, the SRM Powermeter, built into the crank:

Big numbers coming after this weekend, folks...

Depends on what the person weighs. For 58kg rider those watts are pro drug level. For a 78kg rider...

Whats per kg is the data that means the most. It helps us be more objective with our training goals. How? Cos at the start of the season your putting out 300w for 10mins and then during the season your putting out 300w but youve dropped 6kg.

Quote from Lance during the TDF. 'If I wake up a certain weight, and I know what watts Ive been putting out, then nobody is coming close..nobody.

[quote="Alistar"]Just out of interest the guy who came 10th in the Paris Roubaix averaged 320W for nearly 7hrs

Looks like JBC is our only hope!

320W for 7 hours doesnt mean much when you dont know what Fabian weighed that day.

Im suspecting a few riders in the peleton fib about their race weight cos it would make it so obvious judging by their watts per kg that some 'assistance' was used. 8)

Greg Lemond suggest off season and on season power testing as a doping control measure. The UCI ignored it. :)

How on earth are people getting 10m readings with a powertap cpu?

These are my PB's for this year. 65kg. Currently racing Div 1 on the Gold Coast.

30s: 724w
1m: 538w
5m: 363w
20m: 283w

He'd be a similar weight to Fabian as he's quite a big guy for a cyclist. He's about 6ft2 and used to weigh around 78kgs a few years ago...but probably has slimmed down a few kgs now being on HTC duties.

He did say in his blog that Cancellara "made everyone(including him) look stupid in the last 10k's" when he just rode off the front by himself to the finish line leaving everyone in his wake.

Can a watts/kg section be added? Perhaps only for significant times, whatever you think they may be.Obviously maximum is going to be one.
