I've just joined the Forum and am a very keen racing cyclist.

I was hit by a car 20 months ago and broke my hip. My hip is fine, but the ensuing 4 months on crutches weakened my quads considerably and my knee is still maltracking.

I don't have any pain or discomfort during or after a turbo session or during or after a flat gentle road ride, the soreness kicks in a couple of hours after a hilly ride where I have had to push that much harder.

I am doing loads of daily stretches, wall sits and have just started going to the gym to try and strengthen the VMO even more.

Has anybody else gone through this process and if so, any suggestions?

wow awesome!! must be tough coming back from such a brutal injury.. dont have much advice to offer as im only learning myself but best of luck to you!

I think it will just take time. Muscles tend to repair and develop at a different speed to tendons and ligaments. So at different times, the muscles will be stronger than the ligaments, or the ligaments will be stronger than the muscles etc etc. Getting back into a sport will exaggerate those differences. So it will just require plenty of patience.

I know you only want to race, and don't want to keep riding if you can't race, and I would definitely be the same. But given time, I'll think you'll get back !

Do you think some long rides on fixed would help ?

i stopped cycling for roughly a year and i found it took me 3 month's to get feeling comfortable, just take it easy and remind yourself that you will get your form back and that it can't just disapear, during those 3 month's i found the best thing to do is just have lot's of little rides, i was commuting to work pretty much ebery day so doing about 15/20 miles a day with one maybe two rest day's and a longer ride at the weekend.

cycling is a punishing sport and you must ease your body back into it to prevent further damage.

can't really offer any advice, but JBC's point re. riding fixed for a while is interesting. i'm a believer in the best way of getting better at riding is to ride more, and if you can't freewheel, you're definitely riding more! i've ridden fixed for years, and it's done wonders for my rather wonky pedalling style.

I think that one of the fastest 10s in our club this season was a 19.38 ridden on 110" fixed.

I used to ride fixed and the beauty about it is that you don't question whether you are in the right gear, you just have to ride as hard as you can!

Which was considerably faster than my fastest, also ridden on 110 fixed !

And he is older than me ! :shock:
