invisible goblins with hammers

it was the 3rd run of the day. just shakin loose cobwebs and warming up. not riding aggressively or even doing anything hard when (right around :30) my bike suddenly decides to spontaneously abort the drive train. rear derailleur was shorn in 2 and shot off in multiple directions, chain kinked and twisted beyond repair, 4 spokes blew out.

i'm not a new rider, was on a capable machine that gets regular care, didn't not clip anything, hit a rock, shift gears. aside from invisible goblins with hammers, i have no idea what might have caused this.

any ideas?

Sounds like it's a chain issue. Either a stiff link or perhaps more probable a rivet that weren't properly seated.

Could have been a stone or stick flicked up and jammed in the chain?
Maybe the derailleur had been damaged in a crash previously, so was weakened?
