European and Eurasian special powerlifting

Hiya,

I went to the last day of this competition to see some powerlifting action. The last day was heavyweights. 82.5kg and up. I think the heaviest guy in the 120+ was 126kg.
There were competors of all levels and ages and it was good to see trends and stuff.

For some reason all the short guys were doing huge deadlifts.
All the guys from Turkmenistan were amazing.
One guy in the 100kg catagory cot a score of 600 which was pretty impressive to watch. I think he is the international special powerlifting champion. He was only beat by a 52kg guy in the bench press. the little guy lifted more for his bodyweight.

So in powerlifting they use this weird formula, weilks formula or something to work out how well you did proportionate to your weight.

In this comp the seemed to split the Men and the women apart, on different days. I was hoping to see some women lift! A women from Russia won almost all the medals.

You wouldn't believe how low some people go in the squat. All the squats in the gym that i see are well of the mark and i've only started to do them properly. They are really not that far off from deep squats.

Powerlifters definetly seem to have a common shape to their muscles but i can't quite place it?

It was also facinating to hear what muscles were used in all the parts of the lift. Like i never knew that you used your trapezius in the top part of the deadlift? Also what muscles are used at what stages in the bench.

Loads of the competers had big bellys, but i don't know if this was normal for powerlifters or if it was because of conditions that the lifters had.

Facinating!!!

great! Powerlifting comps are so much fun and you learn loads just by watching. The amount of little things you need to remember when competing is unbelievable as well...

Some squatters actually can do more when they go deep and get the reflex - did these guys bounce it from deep? Of course then there are some who are just so ridiculously strong that they go deep just to show off :D

Traps surely work hard with deadlift, but then again, very few muscles don't!

Hey mate, while we are on the subject of powerlifting, here's a site with qualifying totals for unequipped lifters:
http://jamesj74.users.btopenworld.com/b ... totals.htm (scroll down for the unquipped)

And as far as i understand these are for national events, not local smaller comps. So for you it would be 440kg and for a guy like me 520kg - it's not too bad IMO!!!! I'm sure i'll have 520kg total in a year!

I didn't know they had something seperate for people who prefer just using their muscles to lift the weights. That's good to see.
