A question about world's strongest man

Postby prenna » Thu May 27, 2004 9:11 am

Does anyone know how long the run is on the events where they carry the Africa Stone (I think that's what it's called)? They do laps going from one end to the other and I need to know how long that distance is.

Basically yesterday I tried to lift a 53kg (over halfway to my goal of 100kg) sandbag and it almost killed me but I've worked out that I can lift it easier if I use the same kind of approach the strongmen use with the Africa stone. I'm planning on lifting it and doing four laps of my hallway, putting it down, resting, then doing it again. This should build up a bit of endurance while also giving me a clean-type movement for every four laps. I'd like to be able to compare the distance I am carrying the bag for with the distance they are carrying the Africa stone for.

I can't remember the africa stone event, only thing that i can remember are the atlast stones, which are loaded on platforms, or different carrying events which seem to differ from contest to contest, and they carry things like shields (made from a slab of rock) and stuff - and that carrying event was 50 minute rounds x2 and it was for time.

But no doubt there is an event where they carry a stone for distance/speed as well! Strongman events are so versatile.

If they bear any resemblance to the Atlas stones they should be between 110-150kg.

Though a stone is much harder to lift than a sandbag, so its not really comparing like with like. Stones are slippery, and the roundness make them hard to grip at all. I'd think it is twice as hard to lift a round stone than a sandbag, so once the 220kg sandbag starts feel ok, then you are ready :D

Stone carry

The stone used in WSM usually weighed in around 350-400 lbs. for the event - the Africa stone was modeled after the Husafelt stone (sometimes spelled Hussafell) which weighs something like 378 lbs. or so. I don't think that a lot of people make a long distance with it, some only a few feet some 100 meters or so, but with a weight that heavy it is a feat to be able to lift it off the platform and make it 3 paces without collapsing or dropping it on your feet! Good luck with your training on this - sandbags are definitely way safer!
