Summerfest Open Competition Results

Postby sensless » Mon Jul 11, 2005 5:22 am

I competed at the Summerfest Open yesterday. The competition has a clean and jerk event and a deadlift event. I was able to train in the clean and jerk for two weeks prior to the meet, before that I hadn't lifted for two months due to a sprained back and broken rib. The meet was a ton of fun and there were some impressive lifters there.

In the clean and jerk I was successful at 110kg and 120kg, I just missed at 127.5kg. If I had been given a fourth the 127.5kg would have gone easily as I had goofed on my form during the clean and lost the bar. I ended up fourth in my weight class. The top two finishers in my weight class were successful at 152.5kg and 170kg, they are both on full ride scholarships for weightlifting and are olympic hopefuls. There was a 70 year old man in my weight class that was successful at lifting 110kg, most impressive. My form sucks in this event, I have no technique at all and just brute the bar around.

In the deadlift I wasn't sure what I'd be able to lift since I hadn't deadlifted since the competition I was in a few months ago on one day of notice. I figured I should still be able to hit 500 pounds so I listed that as my opener. Before this competition started I began to get a bit dizzy from being in the sweltering heat and sun for 4.5 hours already with nothing consumed but beer (yes I drank beer during the competition). This made me a bit concerned but then I was called out to give my opener a go. Half of the people in my weight class were already out by the time my lifting started (all finished below 500), so I just had to beat out 2 more guys to get a top three spot. One of the guys I knew could beat me from chatting with earlier, so the best I could hope for was 2nd. The 500 ended up pulling smooth and easy, the announcer picked on me for not using enough weight. So I jumped to 530 for my second attempt, which would guarantee me a third place finish if I got it. I went up to make my pull but my mind was a bit off and I failed at the knees. I was pretty annoyed with myself for allowing that to happen, and then I had to follow myself for my third attempt at the same weight. Some of the older guys (the 60 and over lifters) told me to take off my boots since it made me lift from a 2 inch deficit. I followed there advice and nailed the 530 and made sure to hold for about 10 seconds and shout to the crowd (there were a few hundred people watching). So I managed to walk away with a fine third place finish.

All in all a great time. I look forward to giving this meet a go again next year. One of the heavyweight deadlifters opened with 730 and just passed after that because nobody else was close to him. I guess he can hit over 800 but he had recently had surgery on a ruptured bicep tendon so he just wanted to "take it easy". Wow.

That's a really great account of the competition. Congratulations on your placing's, they are excellent!

Clean and Jerk must be so hard to perfect - I cant imagine how anyone could do 120 kg - nevermind 170 kg!

Nice one, sounds like a really fun day. Your numbers still astound me, especially because you haven't been training consistently and all the injury/illness :!: It would have been fun to see you pull the 530 lbs with the big shout at the end :D . Uh, I don't suppose someone was there taking pictures or something?

Crystal,

My girlfriend was there with a disposal camera taking some pictures, Ryan forgot his camera at the office (as expected). When those get developed I can post 'em on up here.

Jonathan,

I will be competing at the Hudson Natural Open (full powerlifting meet) in October. That event will be a sanctioned USAPL meet so I won't be able to wear my kilt and drink beer the whole time, unfortunately. My training for that meet begins tomorrow at 6pm, I hope to hit at least a 1500 total unequipped. Though I will be working with a strength coach so I'm hoping I can get to a 1575 total and qualify for nationals unequipped, as that would be a nice send off before I have to go in for hip surgery. Shoot, if I qualify for nationals I may delay the surgery so I can compete in nationals before I may be forced to retire from the strength game. There are some highland games that I wanted to compete in, but they are occurring the same weekend as a friend's wedding so I can't do that. If I can get a few extra days of vacation out of work I may stay in Colorado (that's where the wedding is) for an extra week and compete at the highland games that are out there the following weekend.

Littlegirlbunny,

There can be a lot of technical pieces to the clean & jerk, but I just haven't ever bothered with any of that. Starting in August I will be training at an olympic lifting club on Saturdays, the man who runs it thinks I could hit 150kg after working with him 3 or 4 times. So if the impending hip surgery doesn't impact me to drastically I hope to be able to hit at least 50kg more than I did this year. I think that once I get to a point where I can clean more than I can jerk (or press out, I've seated pressed 140kg in the past) I will become more focused on getting the form right. Until then it is tough because I'm not forced to rely on technique at all.

Hip surgery sounds quite serious, it's pretty amazing that you lift so well with a dodgy hip. Well done for the Summerfest!

whoah, good numbers there mate. What are you current PB's (are the ones on the table current?) and how much are you hoping to improve each of the three?

Interesting to hear you chose to go with the coaches - let us know how it goes.

Good luck!

I don't know what my current numbers are. I have been injured and sick so much this year that I haven't really been working out consistently in the gym. Most of my training that I have done has been strongman stuff, so that has helped keep my strength high and confidence strong, but doesn't really quantify gains very well, so the numbers on the table might be high, they might be low, not sure.

I think I'm pretty weak right now for the gym lifts, but a lot of that is from just not being in there doing those exact movements so I know I will make a lot of quick progress. I'm hoping to hit at least a 600 squat, 350 bench, and 600 deadlift at the Hudson Open. I think those are pretty reasonable. I just missed 545 in the squat last January, so 600 shouldn't be too far off. The deadlift is tricky because I had to switch to conventional stance so my weakpoint has changed, but that's where the strength coach comes in. Also my deadlift feels like I have a lot of room for improvement and I get a lot of crossover benefit coming from the squat. I haven't bothered benching at all, so I don't know if I can even push 300 right now, but once again with a strength coach I should be able to pile at least 50 pounds onto my max in 3 months just from being consistent. Hopefully it all goes well. In the past I have been able to pile 200 pounds onto whatever my "current" total is if I work hard and focus for 3 or 4 months.
