i unexpectedly competed in the 8th annual Scottish games at my university today. bad weather so not too many showed up but it was a blast to say the least. all weights used were considerable less than the standard. here's how it went.
-event 1: bail toss. i sucked at this. didn't have good technique at all and tried to use pure strength. result, last place.
-event 2: stone throw. tried every technique and had my best throw barrel style.
-event 3: caber toss. super fun event. got the heavy one to go at 12 o'clock. then tried the longer one that was about the same weight and could barely even hold it up. my roomate was the only one who flipped it and almost got it to 12.
-event 4: weight throw. being a huge throwing fan i couldn't wait to tackle this one. very wet grass/mud so it was hard to spin (but i did anyway). my best throw was 29' 1" with a 35 lb weight. good enough for 2nd place!!!
-event 5: hammer throw (as in sledgehammer). no spins allowed on this and i managed to heave it 74 feet. missed 2nd place by less than a foot. i made sure to let out the biggest scream i could once the hammer was launched. very powerful feeling.
-event 6: weight for height (35 lb weight). i was terrible at this. couldn't even make it over the lowest rung.
oh well. finished the day in 4th place (out of 5 competitors) and probably missed 2nd place by my poor showings in the bail and weight for height tosses. right now i am completely exhausted and never felt better. i can see why ryan and jon have their own kilts.
