spotting is so hard!
the main fault is that they didnt use the catching belts...

Yes, you know better these things, it was my first time when seeing that kind of squat apparatus

I think they had those belts, but were those too loose or something? Are there newer any cages (with safety bars) used in comps?

Federations that use IPF-like rules only use Spotters and you have to walk the weight out. WPC-ish federations use a monolift with safety bands/chains (usually). No federation (that I have heard of) uses power cages.
