what odd objects do you lift?

Postby Malcolms Billy » Wed Jan 21, 2004 7:07 am

Just out of curiosity, and because it could produce some interesting replies
Basically, I'm not into lifting odd objects as such, but working at a fruit and veg stall has me hoisting bags and crates of goodies about. Bags of carrots are favourite in the heavy weight department. Least favourite are big, heavy boxes that are stored above (my) head level - which isn't so hard as I'm only 5'5".

Go on then, tell us your secrets!

See ya,
Billy

Hi Billy,

Re odd objects that I lift. Well, there are really two main sections of odd objects in my life. Animal related stuff and fire service related things.

Animals first, the main things I lift are bales of hay and bags of animal feed. They each weigh in at around 20 kilos and I carry them around to the various fields and animal pens at the amount of around 20 a day. If a delivery comes I have to unload around 300 bags from the lorry to my feed store. Another type of unusual thing I lift is the animals themselves. If they escape from their stables or they need treating for injuries or illness. Today for example I had to lift two of my goats out of Percy the piglets stable as I think they had been having an all night party in there last night! Apart from that other odd objects are paving stones, fencing posts, roofing panels, gates and the ramp to the lorry which weighs about 6 tonnes - seems like it anyway.

Fire Service stuff is mainly 70 mm hose reels which I think are about 20 kg but seem to weigh double that when you have to keep running them out and reeling them in! The Light Portable Pump, which is about 200kg on a four man lift and is neither light nor portable! Clan Lucas cutting gear which is just heavy and the 135 ladder which is about 220kg and comes thundering down of the back of the Pump with enough ferocity to take your arm out of its socket if you are not ready for it!

my odd object lifting doesn't have anything to do with work, but i have couple of sandbags. They are army bags with smalled sandbags inside them (so i can change the weight easily).

I can take them out for a walk farmers walks style or make one a bit heavier and just carry it in any way i can.

Once we move to a house i'll get all kinds of toys to train with :)

Odd objects

Postby VeganEssentials » Wed Jan 21, 2004 7:05 pm

I've got a few odd objects I work with, and as with JP I definitely plan to get more once I relocate to a larger home!

I've got a backpack that I load up between 50 and 85 lbs. and walk with (not so much an odd object but still a fun toy) I've got a 50 lb. duct-taped light sandbag and a duffel that I fill between 100 and 150 lbs. of sand, and when weather is permitting I often visit my old office down the road and lift stones out front (there are quite a few ranging from aroud 75 lb. to over 200 lb. that line the driveway.) I definitely find it fun just to try and lift things I come across - for example, while on vacation this past summer a friend and I chopped a downed tree just to have fun lifting it while we were camping. Made a 50 lb. section that was around 14" in diameter and a much larger, heavier piece that was around 9" in diameter and around 180 lb. Deadlifting the big log was difficult enough in itself since you can't actually grip it but rather have to hook your arms around it, and let's just say that attempts to clean and press it overhead left some deep scratches all over us that took weeks to heal!

Anyway, odd object lifting is fun stuff. When I get room I'll be purchasing a good beer keg as well as a loadable steel stone to train with, but that's surely a few months off.

Necromancy!

Bicycles are pretty odd and pretty cool to lift around. I will get some clubs and a sandbag soon. Also, I need to shovel holes a lot, which qualifies as a low-weight asymmetrical deadlift for repetitions. :D

I do most of my exercise in the playground while my kids play and so I use my kids for weights.

Yes, I use my lad. He's a useful weight because he clings on, unlike a plate. I have use him for squats and now for running and press ups. I've floor pressed him for reps but it's not so comfortable. When he was smaller I used to throw him vertically too, that was hardcore cardio. I think he's around 26 kg, but getting heavier while I'm getting older.

Ha, talking about the kids thing... Over on Vegan Strength Germany, we had a little competition for a "Strauss Press". The objective was to overhead-press my body weight or the actual me. Seitanic was there faster than I was, sadly.
