losing strength in one lift but not the other

Postby JP » Sun Mar 03, 2013 8:48 pm

do you get these irritating anomalies :D

since stopping to train in a very focused and dedicated manner, moving countries etc etc, i lost a lot of strength, and have now been trying to make up lost ground.

but the strength loss is so uneven!

power cleans, just did 120 - my all time PB is 122.5, practically the same.
but on deadlifts i havent pulled even 230-240 in months, all time pb being 270

on front squat i did 170 not too long ago, 182 my pb
but back squat i have lost 25kg (approx)

log strict press is going ok, all time pb on strict log is 110, i have done 100 now and 2x97.5
but log itself, alltime pb 132, and been failing with 115 now!

my strongman events are waywayway lower now that what they used to be at my peak.

...maybe just go with the flow and see what happens :D

I seem to experience this phenomenon every time I diet and then get back to eating hearty and lifting heavy. Usually it just decimates my bench press. Last time, it destroyed my squats but overhead press and deadlift went up during the time I was on the diet. Uuummm....I'll take the trade-off! For now.

I feel like my overhead strength is down, particularly strict pressing. Everything else seems to be moving along ok though, although it has been ages since I've maxed out on anything.

i think weight loss hits the squat and pressing hard, deadlift doesnt seem to be affected as much for me either and many report the same...

For me it seems to be totally random which lift goes up and which down.
Last year, at first my conv deadlift was very strong and my sumo deadlift very weak. Recovering from my cut early in the year sumo was coming back up. Then conventional was getting stronger again and pulled 200 in september. Final cut after that killed my conventional deadlift but sumo went up to 195 and finally 207,5 while conv was down to 180. No sumo could be anywhere from 200 to 215 and conv is 190+.

My bench was going up step by step last year, increasing from competition to competition. At that comp where my deadlift was down my bench actually was up, so was my squat. About overhead power I have no idea, didn't test it in ages.

Technique set aside (which can always make a huge difference), I'd say the reason is the strength of individual muscle groups. Stronger hips help you off the floor in a sumo deadlift, which is my weakness. But they help you lock out a conventional deadlift, which has never been a problem for me, so this didn't have any effect on my regular deadlift. Stronger lower back helps you lock out sumo, which is not a huge problem for me but it helps my weakness off the floor close stance. Stronger hamstrings help both lifts tremendously.
