I think he just had a bad day.
He was unable to show his capabilities in any of the events. He was quite quick in the yoke + loading medley though.

Martin Wildauer, the young deadlift monster from Austria, placed 4th btw.

8 out of 13 id mid table, it was his first comp at this level, and was one of the lightest. Also competing against some of the best including 3 of the top four in WSM 2011. Given all that, not bad at all - especially for a bad day.

If you look at it that way 8th place really isn´t bad.
He did compete in last year´s Strongman ClassX, which was also a SCL competition, so this wasn´t his first time.
But last year he placed 9th, so it´s still a better result than that and I´m curious to see what he can do on a good day.

Edit: He also mentioned a hip injury that occured some days or weeks before the competition.
