Uncooked Quinoa

Postby sage » Fri Mar 16, 2007 2:15 am

Hello,

I've read that quinoa can be sprouted and crushed.
http://chetday.com/quinoa.html But I am wondering if eating the seeds simply uncooked and unprepared is healthy. Will I be able to digest them?

Currently I am eating organic instant oatmeal for breakfast everyday. I grind sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds and some quinoa in my food processor, and add it to the oatmeal with raisins.

Quinoa doesn't seem to grind as well as the other seeds. (They do a little bit, but I am going to assume that they are still whole.) Should I prepare them some other way, or do you think it would be alright to continue the way I am doing things? Convenience is important, by the way. Maybe I could just grind them longer before I add the other seeds to the processor.

Thanks,

Sage,

Start reading up on raw food. Some good books are Rawvolution and Raw Food Real world. There are good arguments in favour of sprouting instead of cooking.

Ciao. :D

Since raw is good enough for every other animal on the planet, it is good enough for me. I'd much rather be like any one of them than most humans anyway.

Have you tried quinoa flakes? They are as instant as they come. :) Just add hot water and stir. They have quite a nutty flavour and quinoa porridge is a bit different from oatmeal, but it may be nice with some quinoa flakes added to your oatmeal porrige.

I can second the plug for quinoa flakes. Personally I like to liven up my quinoa porridge with fresh banana pieces and a few raisins and, if I can be bothered, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Where can you buy quinoa flakes? I've never seen them at Whole Foods before...,

I got Suma's, but since I bought them at our local organic food shop, I can't tell you what chains have them. Sorry. :( Hope you find them though.

Yum, thanks for the tips. Yeah it looks like finding the flakes is going to take a bit of effort. I have a hammer. Maybe I can make some. :o

But there is a shop in Montreal's Atwater Market that has had every obscure food I've ever searched for there. Except tempeh. I can't find that anywhere...

Cheers,
