Junk food lover in need for advice!

Postby nikadee43 » Sun Jul 09, 2006 1:14 am

Hi everyone! My name's Shanika, and I just joined the website. I've recently decided to go vegan, and it's been a great change, except I just can't stop eating junk food! It's really dificult because I work basically all the time, so I'm always getting food on the go. It's hard for me to find the time to make my breakfast or lunch to take to work. I work 2 jobs, and it's a really long commute. So whenever I get a break, i try to go for healthy meals or snacks, which isn't too hard, but I always end up going for the bad stuff!! I was just wondering if any of you had to combat such a feat, and how you did it. I'm trying to get back into shape, and with not much time for working out, I at least want to be able to keep my eating habits in check.

Try and pack food. Tupperware containers have been my saviour.

Nuts and cereal are also good to pack. Granola is nice and sweet and not bad for you.

Try mixing something up to take with you the day before. I've been living off a couple things i made(with my mom's help for now) earlier this week.

Hi! :D .

I am also a lover of junk-food, I have always been this way, long before I was Vegan.

To be frank, lack of time is no excuse (though many of us have used it!! ). How long does it really take to eat a bowl of breakfast cereal or oatmeal in the mornings?. How long does it take to make a sandwich to take to work with you (make it the night before), or make a large pan of soup to last a few days?. Or of course you can take fruits with you for instant snacks.

I'm not putting you down, I have used every excuse in the book to keep eating junk food - I disgust myself!!. It just takes a little bit of effort to be organised - take it a step at a time!! :D .

Anyway, well done for taking the step of going Vegan, you won't be sorry you did!.
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind..............

Tupperware (et al) and a microwave can be your best friends. I cook a larger quantity of stuff than I can eat all at one time, like plenty of brown rice, chick peas, hominy, blackeyed peas, lima beans, black beans, turnip greens, brocholi, spinach, corn, etc. I keep them in Tupperware containers and take portions of whatever I feel like eating at the time. For meals away from home, Tupperware is great for that as well. Since I love all of that, and I never really ate lunch on a regular basis before going vegan, I can look forward to lunch, and don't crave junk foods anymore.

hmmm yes I've ate alot of junk food lately, I let myself free for all in the hope that I'd sicken myself - I have! So now I'm on my health kick, try having lots of smoothies and flavour your food more with lemon juice herbs and spices soy sauce. This site is really inspiring me, or reading and talking about healthy food helps. work out when you are going to have your treats rather than just picking up as you go along. Writing down what you eat can really help - it'll shock you into making healthy changes. Junk food is addictive, so treat it like any other addiction. All the chemicals they add are making you addicted, try and visualise them and see them for what they are. Buy a new vegan recipe book and get new ideas and inspiration.

try not to be too hard on yourself, its probably better to wean yourself off the junkfood slowly, so that you dont get whip lash!
And if you have a pretty nice healthy old diet sorted out the odd bit of 'treat' food is fine id say. I eat waay too many chocolate muffins myself,.but i like em and im keeping em!
