Another new guy question

Postby pelicanAndrew » Mon Jul 03, 2006 9:46 pm

I've been looking around here for a few days and i finally decided to join.

I was just wondering if anybody has suggestions for vegan clothing. I have a trader joes in town and they're great for animal free skin, hair and dental products. I'll be going there in a few weeks to start stocking up for college(you can read my intro for more details on why the heck i'm starting a vegan lifestyle).

I'm already looking at the Rowley vans or Ihemp for shoes. I just need pants, boxers, shirts.

do you have a closet full of leather pants, boxers and shirts? :)

maybe i need more clarification, but this seems pretty easy? cotton? denim? if you're working out, blended shirts (polyester/cotton/lycra type thing) tend to wick away sweat better than straight cotton

Sorry i should've been more specific i must have been half asleep when i was posting that.

I was looking for organic cotton/hemp clothing that's not made in sweatshops. I've only been able to find said clothes that are made in china. I figured that the people on this board would have a lot more knowledge of that then the average joe. I've been meaning to do the above for about a year(even longer than i've been a veggie)

Any shaving products would be nice too.

p.s. i made the complete change over today!!!(diet wise, i still need to get hair and body products along with a belt and wallet)

arlington heights/decatur...thats around chicago, eh?

american apparel sells cotton (and blend) tshirts and is all american made. they're a bit pricey (15 bucks for a tshirt) but they're good quality, fit well, and dont get distorted in the wash.

shaving stuff = go to bath and body works and look for the bigelow apothecaries stuff. they should have soap and hair stuff too, although it might be a bit pricey.

do you have a whole foods near you? they should have a good selection of bath and body stuff too. i like dr bronners soaps, for hair stuff i use aveda shampoo and some other kind called crew for hair holding purposes. obviously with soaps you have to watch out for tallow (lard) but its not hard to find soap without it assuming you're going somewhere that doesnt sell zest or one of the major brands.

dont throw out your belt/wallet just because they're leather. that's just silly and wasteful.

Well i was planning on giving my belt to my dad and my wallet to my bro.

I do have a whole foods but i also have a trader joes. They're way less expensive and have pretty much the same stuff. I'll check bath and body for the shaving stuff.

Hello I can't offer you advice on specific US companies the only one i know of is no sweat. I personally get loads of good clothes 2nd hand from charity shops, thrift stores, markets, boot sales etc which is an eco friendly option. You just have to avoid wool, silk+ leather+ suede then. Good luck :)

A good place to go is www.veganessentials.com. Another good resource is a book called "Vegan Freak" by Bob and Jen Torres. The book lists all sorts of resources for vegans and their website does too www.veganfreak.com. They also host a weekly podcast that you can download from their website and/or iTunes for free. It covers a lot of interesting topics.

Good Luck.
