AM I allergic to Soy?

Postby migizi » Wed Jan 11, 2006 10:52 pm

Hi everyone I'm new here, and I have a question, I bought a 1/2 gallon of Soy Milk flavored original, took an 8oz glass and swallowed. Almost immediately, my throat started itching so bad, and a strange feeling down my esophagus, plus a weird pain under my tongue, which was so annoying,,,I have found I can eat soy but I can't drink Soy so,,,,should I just go for Almond, hazelnut, Rice Milk? Was that a Red Flag going off that I am allergic? and I should avoid even the solid soy products? it was scary, I felt at one point my throat was closing....any help would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like you are allergic. I am severely allergic to sunflower seeds and a lot of those symptoms you mention are similar to mine. Then again im not a doctor of any sort. I would suggest seeing an allergist. P.S. Rice milk rules, i prefer it over soymilk.

it may not be soya allergy cos you're ok with solid soya products. it may be something in that particular brand of soya milk (the flavouring maybe?)

did an experiment last night, I sat down and ate a boca burger,,,didn't get the throat feeling but definetely in my esophagus more toward the stomach, than in the thoat, so I realize it gives me some discomfort, I had the feeling before, but I guess I just passed it off as just my body getting used to digesting it, and I realize it's a feeling in which I don't want. So I guess this is Goodbye for Soy. Rice and the Almond milk it is for me...it seems a big protein source is now caput,,,

sometimes you hear people being ok with certain amounts of soya, but then getting some problems with larger amounts. So perhaps worth just cutting it down to quite small amounts?

Ugh, I suspect I have this problem  .

I have known something was up for ages, I have symptoms such as itching inner ear(s), rhinitis, sore throat, upset stomach, joint pain, and Migraine  . I have thought it was sugar I was sensitive to, or maybe a wheat/gluten thing - I have checked these things by process of elimination. Now I am left 99% sure it's a Soya thing :? .

This is tough - usually I have soya at pretty much each meal in some form or other - milk, tofu, soy sauce, 'meat' analogues, or in bread :x .

I am now starting a soy elimination diet and hoping that I have, at last, found the key. I had a paralysing Migraine today and I ain't putting up with them any longer  .

You may be allergic to carrageenan. Try soy milk w/o it as an ingredient.

Well I have a pretty severe reaction to one brand of soy milk, but I'm fine with the others (I think). Maybe it's just the trace ingredients in that brand? Soy milk is a lot cheaper than the other sorts and that's the main reason why I don't want to give it up.

Allergies

I have some ideas.

Processed foods are not required to list full ingredients on the label (at least in Canada and the USA this is the case). Only general ingredients are required. For example, is there is a sub-ingredient, such as sugar and oil added to maple syrup need not be listed on the ingredients. A product may list "flour" on the ingredients, but no further details of what kind of flour or what is in the flour. In the processing of the soy beans for soy milk, who knows what may be used in washing the beans, soaking the beans, and further cooking and processing of beans. Something could be added to the soymilk as a defoaming agent and not be required to be listed as it is part of the "process" and not the final product. As far as I have learned, ingredient lists on products from Canada and the USA are almost useless as only the main ingredients are listed. Countries such as China really have no rules at all.

Furthermore, my wife had a life long allergy to melons of which she would have an immediate reaction. Unfortunatly she loves melons. Well, when we met, I suggested trying organic melons. She did. No reaction at all. Thus she was not allergic to melons, but something else.

To be certain, you can see an allergist.

I am allergic to soy powders. Tried a Slim Fast product that required you to add water instead of milk (advertised as a soy product) and my throat tightened, eyes starting burning, nose started running and I got a horrible headache. I staggered to my bed and passed out for six hours. I tried it again the next week, and before I even finished the glass, the same thing happened. I am trying Visalus (just like Slim Fast) and can only use one scoop of the powder (two recommended). Even then, my throat gets tight, so I'm going to have to stop. I've also had terrible reactions to pancake mixes. Don't have a problem with tofu, though.

AM I allergic to Soy?

Postby Catt Queen » Mon Apr 30, 2012 3:26 pm

All the info I can find is that this product contains cows milk in the form of whey. Perhaps that is the problem?
