The Food Revolution by John Robbins ~ For an examination of what we typically eat and why we shouldn't.

The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell ~ A good, hard look at the animal-based diet and those who encourage it.

These two books were my personal wake up call.

OK - so this might net be the perfect place to post this, but back in 1989.. it was a comedy sketch from "Bit of Fry and Laurie" that turned me vegetarian (before becoming vegan) .. I just found it on youtube here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF9h2v3D7mc .. ahh the late 80's ......

Hi all,

I'm currently a vegetarian but I will transition to vegan as soon as I can but I will do it at a slow and steady pace dropping out one item at a time. Cheeze is my thorn.. and I will defeat it.

Reasons for veganism?

My number one is this, it was the main diet since the dawn of mankind and it was given as the ultimate diet in a holistic manner. It is the most simple diet too just grab a carrot or an apple and chew. Animals don't have to be tormented and killed just because of me..

I went fishing with a friend of mine and this was where I realized where my mind and heart was in this manner.. it is in a sense easy to go into the store and see them all wrapped up in their coffins.. but when I saw the hook in the eye of the fish.. and the eye pulled from it's socket.. my stomach turned.. then the next fish.. the hook caught in the gills.. to see the struggeling fish that was obviously in pain gasping for air as the knife penetrated and severed it head.. I could not watch.. so yeah.. VEGAN 4 LIFE! I now actually get sick of the smell walking through the meat and fish department..

Sorry if my comment is a bit graphical.. I won't go fishing again..

Watching Earthlings, Reading The China Study and Eat To Live, and the way farmers in NZ exploit cows and the detrimental effect it has on our environment.

I went vegan firstly for ethical reasons, then environmental, and lastly health :-)

"best speech you will ever hear" by gary yourufsky - available with subtitles in different languages

there is an "updated" version - but i think the old one is better - what i like about his lecture is the fact he states on the start very clear his not a democrat or a republican ect ect .... great start to it all - and it gives people a bit of a tiny shock to leave all of their previous views aside and to listen to him with an open mind

Answer to loveliberate bellow (to not derail this thread) - i wrote a huge reply but decided to delete it cause the thread should focus on resources - about gary is i believe he had a positive impact - im not sure how much - cause there are many reasons - but maybe the most important thing he did is give hope to people that this is a big movment - and that there is a point to try and convince people to become vegan - i think he did make more activists thats for sure - and activists equal more vegans

(now there's a religious "gary yourfsky" who created "the lecture every jew has to watch" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMJs3pZIK9o and it does have a huge impact it explains why in judasim you should be vegan) intersting things - "land of milk and honey" (honey its 100% means honey of dates and other fruits - and milk might mean milk of fruits though im not sure about milk) - "temple animal sacrifices " back in the day in israel everywhere people would sacrifice animals whenever they wanted to - so making animals be allowed to be sacrificed in only one place "the temple" in Jerusalem and only by prisets and only "high priests" and many other rules actually reduced the killings to a minimum possible
- I wrote a huge reply about israels veganism but deleted it cause i dont want to block this thread, it should be about the resources and i dont want to raise the "israel" thread from the dead cause it might step on some peoples toes politically

I've heard that one of his speeches essentially created the recent explosion of Veganism in Israel. Thoughts?

Israel seems to have a real vegan buzz going on. Awesome.

Native indians and vegetarianism (i understand they were not vegan completely but its still something plus the music is very relaxing)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX6Wegv6qv0 and part 2 :

and also "animals and the buddha" - where buddhist monks from all sects talk against eating meat

For me...
Number one reason: Animals are living, breathing, sentient beings that fee pain and sorrow just like we do as humans and to torture and kill them for their flesh and bodily fluids is simply unethical (and heart breaking).
The fact that animal agriculture is also destroying our planet/environment AND we can prevent disease and improve our health and fitness eating only plants make it a no-brainer that vegan is the way to go :)
I explain in more detail here
