Just point out that those are the rules, you're not being hypocritical... you don't have a choice in the matter.

The difference is, you choose what you eat, wear and do as far as you can.
There is no try, only do.

i agree. We do the best we can. In powerlifting only legal belts are leather, so I use some sometimes. Use them in strongman sometimes as well. But i wont buy one myself, just borrow one of my mates, and then at the same time hope that good non-leather belt comes along :D

Harri won his -96 thai boxing world championships as vegan, but only comp legal gloves were leather so he had to use them. Same goes for some vegan boxers out there.

Similar examples out there. Not ideal, nothing to be proud of, and we should always be on the lookout and push for for vegan alternatives. And there seems to be more of them out there all the time.

Having said all this, i think it would be fantastic if you went vegan (short of the leather gloves), dont let the glove issue hold you back on that decision man!

Agreed. You do as much as you possibly can but don't beat yourself up over it.
For myself, I had to choose between a really crappy synthetic head protector or a really protective leather one. I don't like it, but I like being punched on a basically unprotected head a lot less.
I don't think that's being a hypocrite. Or if it is, then I'm a hypocrite.
Oh well.

it sounds like part of your question is "aren't people going to say -why are you wearing leather gloves if you're vegan?"

i can tell you that no matter what, people will try to "trap" you into some kind of hypocrisy or whtever, including the famous "plants have feelings too, why do you harm them?"

you're never going to please everybody, and going vegan you'll probably annoy people who are ignorant. but the most important person will be happy: You.

Agreed with what they said, but I would probably be the one to just stand down and push for vegan alternatives.

go smash some heads man, and then throw them leather gloves at the judges and swear loudly at their stupid rules!
Next time, I'll spend the money on drugs instead.

gloves

Postby JohnV » Fri Jun 20, 2008 9:10 pm

When we have some vegan mma champs they'll make and allow synth gloves. They'll probably come out of advance design and engineering and everyone will switch to them then. Give 'em a thumping for all the cows! (with good sportsmanship of course) We all have to make compromises, so I say, don't sweat it.
BTW, in India nonviolent ("ahimsa") leather is available from the Ghandi Ashram. It is collected from animals that died of natural causes.

I thought Mac Danzig was a MMA champion?

Either way it doesn't make you a hypocrit. Just fight for change!
