New Diabetic Vegan

Postby Tazza1234 » Sat Feb 09, 2008 8:17 am

Hey All,

My name is Tamara, Im a 22 year old nurse from Australia. I recently turned Vegan as a New Years Resolution after researching Taoism and the benefits of such dietry changes.

I am a Type 1 diabetic and was a little unsure how the changes would affect me, however, so far so good, My blood sugars have been awesome and my cholesterol dropped dramatically :o)

I would love any tips and tricks people have for me as a new convert? Im feeling a little peckish so some yummy snack ideas would be a great start, He he! :o)

Tamara

I'm guessing that a Vegan diet would be great for type 1 diabetics! It's (often) a bit higher in carbs, that must be acounted for when desciding on insulin dose, but other than that it's base most often is realy low GI foods.. (you can ofcorse eat a crappy vegan diet to... but... )

No trics, just try different stuff out and see what fits you.. and check out the recipie subforum.. yummy!!!

Tamara, you should check out the http://www.pcrm.org/health/diabetes/index.html website, for info about diabetes and the vegan diet, They recently (Feb. 7) had a Video Support class which talked specifically about type 1 diabetes: http://www.pcrm.org/health/diabetes/livecast020708/ (scroll down to find).

Welcome! :D

Have a search in the Vegan Recipe Forum for yummy recipes. It's perfectly possible to make sugar-free vegan cakes, so no need to suffer from lack of cake :D You can also try making fig and nut balls/bars etc.
