Our club is a non-profit organization that teaches at 3 community centers in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. We teach Chito Ryu karate and Chukido Kwan Hapkido.

Our Hapkido instructor, Grandmaster Chuck Platten, is a Black Belt hall of fame member and a highly respected instructor.

I used to study Chito Ryu at the KW Karate Centre in Waterloo - this is back in the late 80s, under Renshi Jake Klaus.

Now I go to a kickboxing club in North Vancouver, BC (looser, fighting-oriented Karate/Muay Thai style with a bit of jujitsu). I do miss the rigidity and discipline of my old school sometimes! This topic just took me back to the good ol' days! 8)

Dear Trev;

Nice to hear from you !

I like the K-W website, they have descriptions of Chinto Kata and others which I still use. They put on great tournaments too from what I hear. I believe the K-W Chito Ryu is associated with the Kai-Shin Organization headed by Monty Guest just like we are.

My Sensei Oscar Landry, introduced us to Grandmaster Chuck Platten and his Chukido Kwan Hapkido for much the same reasons you are now taking Muay Thai.

Sensei Oscar always told us 99% of fights always end up on the ground, so he always did incorporate grappling and close fighting techniques into our training. The Hapkido fits in nicely with this.

Good luck with your Muay Thai. Its a fantastic art and one great workout !

Best Regards

I'm not sure of their affiliations these days, but back in the day, I did a lot of tournaments. We do a few katas at my current club, but they're watered down somewhat. I still know a few heian katas and practice them. I'm really enjoying the style I'm doing now tho - it's more practical, not that I ever want to be forced to use it, but if I do... leg kicks!! I'm enjoying sport fighting side of it a lot and the training is intense!

Anyway, nice to hear from someone in the southern Ontario Chito Ryu world... on a vegan forum of all places! I have a cousin in Mississauga who has done Karate on and off, and I think his girls are into it now - I'll ask him where they go. Cheers!
