5 rounds of boxing with elbow strikes wearing MMA gloves. What do you guys think? Would it sell? Would it be more popular than boxing?

I dont think so.
Boxing is about consistancy and skill. It IS the sweet science.
People would be getting knocked out too quick with little 4 or 5 ounce gloves.

I'm not at all meaning to be disrespectful, but what would be the point?

MMA gloves are open fingered so that you can maintain your ability to grapple. Boxing gloves are designed the way they are to protect the boxer's hands in addition to the opponent to an extent MMA gloves wouldn't really perform with a strictly (or even just mostly) punching arsenal the same way boxing gloves do.

Boxing has the strict ruleset that it does in order to maintain a certain quality of fight (not superior or inferior to MMA by default, but of a different type).

If it's just boxing with elbows, then it sounds like a watered down form of muay thai sans knees, kicks, and clinching. That just seems kinda boring to me.

My original thought was if professional boxing matches were 5 rounds long and if boxers wore lighter ounce boxing gloves it would make the sport more exciting.

My point is that many boxing matches, including championship bouts today are boring. I grew up watching boxing in the late 1970's and 1980's. I don't remember as many boring boxing matches in the late 70's and 80's. It could be due to the lack of quality boxers today.

This thread is not meant to be a joke.

all prejudices aside i think we'd have to see one fight like that first before judging it so harshly. not much of a MA geek but those people would really mess each other up with MMA gloves AND elbows, no??

muay thai fights are brutal but i dont really dig them.. boxing, even less.
Next time, I'll spend the money on drugs instead.

i prefer muay thai or mma any day, boxing is too much of a sport and too little fight in my eyes. the whole sport rests on the foundation that nobody touches the legs which would put the opponent off balance. do that (a.k.a. kick at the knees or go for any takedown) and you've ruined the game for any boxer.

but that mentioned, boxing as a sport is fine as it is i believe. i don't have to see a guy bleed (there would be ALOT of cuts in mma gloves boxing... and with elbows lol) or hit the canvas to appreciate the tactics and strategy of the game. there where a couple of fights by a cuban boxer in the last olympic championship that where pure poetry. forgot his name...
When people see us doing this, they think it's brutal - but they don't realize what it does to our spirit. / Helio Gracie
