Martial Arts recommendation for young kid

Postby Matt Norwood » Tue Mar 29, 2005 3:50 am

Hey, all, I wanted to know what you might recommend as far as martial arts for my young son, as we want him to take something on in the coming years.

What martial art do you recommend for young children (age 3-5) and why?

I would suggest something like Karate or Judo for a child at that age. The grading systems in most classes of those types means that there are gradings every 3 months or so, which helps the child have a sense of acheivement. In my experience classes teaching karate and Judo seem to cater for youg kids a lot better than instructors in other arts.

Those are just some thoughts off the top of my head. If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

I agree with the above accept with Judo as it can be harmful for developing joints.

hapkido is probably the best, like tae kwon do except they will be trained alot harder fitness wise and learn alot they can develop on if when they're older they want to take a practical martial art.
