Weight training and martial arts

Postby vegan_transboy » Sun Jul 12, 2009 12:41 pm

Hey Guys,

I am currently trying to train 3-4 times a week boxing/muay thai, I was getting injured a lot in my shoulder and a physio friend of mine told me to do weight training to strengthen up.

It has been great advice and it is preventing injuries a lot. BUT question!

It is common knowledge for weight lifters that you should rest the muscles trained 48 hours after weight lifting for full benefit. The thing is... I don't have time to rest in between as I train boxing 3-4 times a week, so I can't do much resting of the muscles.

Is this really BAD? will I damage myself if I don't rest or will I just not get the benefits

Thanks,
VTB

*cough*bullshit*cough*

I used to train well... quite a while by eating, lifting weights, eating again, then off to fight club. All packed in some 4 - 5 hours.

Got big and strong. And MA was going great as well.

Eat plenty, drink tons of water and sleep a bunch. That would be it. No worries.

I guess Kung Fu and Muay Thai are two different thing, so my exp might not be applicable.

I used to lift 3times a week and go to Kung Fu class twice a wk. it was okay.

You can try to lift 3 times a wk and if you are too tired, twice a week is good too. Or you can do Pavel's PTP style training

Try to lift on 1day and do MT on the other.

And remeber to eat well and rest well. Overtraining is very rare but under recovering is pretty common!

You can lift and train MA at the same time. Just listen to your body. If you feel like you're overtraining, pull back a little. And I would recommend giving yourself one day per week where you do nothing physically demanding at all.

No offense to the others... If you can fit yourself in, and have a 3day/week MA schedule, train strength before every session.

And don't do anything on the days in between. But you'll find out for yourself what suits you best.

I'm finally starting BJJ and MT on Friday, killer. In terms of schedule this would be the best for me (and doable). But I dismissed it as impossible, physically.

How has it worked for you?

I used to do a lunchtime weights session, then MA in the evenings. Gave me enough time to refuel, and kept my rest days totally free. Maybe that might be an option for some?

Perfect. Worked usually 9 to 18h, ran to eat, walk the dog, lift weights, eat a bit more, off to fight club, eat a bit again, catch up on VF, go sleep.

Be aware that if you do this 6 times a week like I usually did you're kissing your social life goodbye, but will end up a proper fighting monster.

As long as you're sleeping enough and eating enough throughout the day you'll be fine.

(If you consume a shitload of chemistry and supplements too)

Sweet that you're starting MA training. Personally I would train strength on alternate days and possibly take two rest days a week to begin with.

But killer's schedule is also doable. Try it for a fortnight perhaps, see how you feel.

If you are intent on improving and excelling in martial arts, then I would drastically reduce your weight training and just focus on sport specific training, at least for the first six months. Perhaps I am an unfashionable purist though.
