Nobody expressed surprise about it. Doesn't stop us complaining, though. People aren't going to give up objecting and shut up about something, just because it has become entrenched and expected. That would be like not bothering to point out the problems caused by eating dairy products, because doing so has become mainstream!

I haven't heard any music by Pussy Riot and haven't closely followed the story, so I can't comment on them or their motives (although their naff name makes me wince), but I can comment on the fact that women who are young and attractive get a lot more publicity and sympathy than those who aren't. That makes me sad and cynical.

still dont see the connection...

but i guess we are not getting enough people saying "why animal abuse is in the media while children are suffering" and claims like that :D exactly the same logic.

cant really blame them if some of them are attractive, to me they look like regular young women, so cant see why the need to blame them for it, or bring it up in a context of support against their oppression.

?

Think there's some crossed wires here, I haven't blamed them for anything. My comments were directed at the media handling of the story, not at the group. The only negative thing I said about them is that I think their name "Pussy Riot" is tacky. Anything that highlights the issue of freedom of speech, as they are doing, is a good thing. I have no particular opinion about Pussy Riot, the sincerity of their ethics or their music, because I hardly know anything about them.

ok i see what you mean, but think about it, three women get sent to prison and then a response is criticising that they get more attention because they are allegedly pretty. It doesnt sound supportive of them at all...

I've just re-read my posts in this thread and apart from saying I'm not keen on the band name, I haven't criticised Pussy Riot at all. I have no negative thoughts about them, their image or their motives.

Hope this clarifies things. I'll shut up now so I don't make this thread go boring...
