September slaughterhouse death toll in UK only

Postby JP » Fri Oct 29, 2010 7:17 am

In September 2010 the following animals died in UK slaughterhouses*:

218,000+ adult cattle
7,000 calves
1,280,000+ sheep & lambs
728,000+ pigs (excluding breeding sows and boars: DEFRA states figures for these are "confidential")
68.8 million chickens
1.1 million turkeys

Figures exclude other species and animals exported for slaughter.

Please keep these figures in mind when making food purchases.

and they also exclude animals which didnt make it to the slaughterhouse which are counted as "waste". Or commercially useless male chicklets, or maybe the whole deathtoll from egg production too?

[quote="bob_summers"]astounding.

Indeed. Hard to process statistics of this magnitude.

That's 26.5 chickens... A SECOND.
