It *is* simple, if you understand what's supposed to be doing the work. Took me 5 minutes to learn from an RKC guy at my old gym.
For me 1000 with a 24 would be easier than with a 16, because a 16 is too easy to overpower and thus you don't get the benefit of the bell loading the hamstrings.
