Athlete just turned vegan

Postby nwilson79 » Wed May 30, 2012 1:27 pm

Hi
I'm Nicola, turned vegetarian 2 months ago and have now decided to be vegan. The health benefits i have felt since being vegetarian have been amazing so thought i would improve it even more by going vegan.
Only problem is when travelling abroad to competitions food is limited. Any suggestions on how i can overcome this, especially in countries where i can not speak the language?
Thanks

welcome! what is your sport?

for travelling here are a few ideas:

nuts
dried fruit
protein bars (either buy or make your own ... Clif Builders are a favourite of mine)
Greens powder if you will be really short of veg where you are going
also Oatcakes! (my favourite thing)
JS - They think it will open the door to folk like LordMuppet campaigning for a threeway?

Hello, and welcome.
Where are your from, and what countries are you travelling to? Maybe you could get a vegan passport, to explain what you can and can't eat? http://shop.vegansociety.com/product_in ... cts_id=231

Thanks for the replies. My sport is pistol shooting, not exactly very athletic lol but i have to eat right for my focus and concentration levels. I do a lot of running, cycling and swimming to keep fit.
I will have a look at the link cCLaW posted and thank you Lordmuppet for your suggestions, i will bare them in mind.
I usually travel to countries in Europe, mainly France and Germany.

Hi and welcome.

There are a few athletes who cite veganism as helpful for concentration (Peter Ebdon, snooker, A Japanese racing driver I can't spell and Andy Lally, 24 hour rally driver). Do you have cooking facilities of any description when you arrive?
You can see my training log if you're really bored: www.veganfitness.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16086&start=360

germany - not a problem :) Which parts of germany though, i guess some remote areas might be trickyer, but germany has perhaps the highest amount of vegans in europe, a poll suggested 600 000 vegans in germany which is probably the highest percentage i know of.

but it varies from region to region.

Its good to pop by the travel section and ask tips there!
