Believe me, i've been there. My ex was one of those people who can get muscular and have low bodyfat while eating garbage and jogging once in awhile. I'm the opposite; putting on muscle is a LOT of work, losing it is quick, and the reverse for fat. My old pattern was to work out like a fiend and eat very little for a few month, see no gain and have picked up 1% on my bench press, and to quit. It took a year of eating well and steady exercise until i began to see almost any results. However, now that i have that base built up, progress seems to be coming quicker. My metabolism is definitely higher now; i had been seeking calories to build, and now that i've stopped doing that i'm dropping weight on what would have resulted in a weight gain 2 years ago.
If your metabolism is like mine, the absolute worst thing you can do is take advice from people who burn calories in their sleep, build muscle quickly, and recover from workouts in 5 minutes flat. Chuck those fitness magazines.
I would say, eat to quell hunger, but make it healthy food, and work out hard and give your body a chance to recover. It'll work eventually.
