New member intro: roller derby

Postby Annie#7 » Mon Jun 18, 2012 7:01 pm

Hi all,

My name is Annie, and I play roller derby in the U.S. I've been vegan for 13 years, spouse and child are vegan also. I've only been skating for just over a year, and would love to talk vegan fitness with others, especially any skaters out there. Part of my motivation to improve my game is to show that I can hit just as hard as my meat-eating teammates (I can). ;o) In all seriousness, derby is a great sport to release frustration over things like animal exploitation/suffering, and I'd like to keep playing for as long as I can. I figure the healthier I am, the longer I can skate. I'm no youngster.

Thanks for maintaining such an awesome resource for vegan athletes all over the world. This board is incredible.

Annie

Welcome!

we have at least two roller derby people here. There is a roller derby thread so you can see from there.
JS - They think it will open the door to folk like LordMuppet campaigning for a threeway?

Hello & Welcome Annie! :D

I have 3 vegan family members all into roller derby in some way. Hopefully I can get them posting on here soon!

Welcome!
"The worker has the right to leave his boss, but can she do it? And if she does quit him, is it in order to lead a free life; where she will have no master but herself? No, she leaves to sell herself to another employer. She's driven by the same hunger. Thus the worker's liberty is only a theoretical freedom, lacking any means of realization; an utter falsehood."

Hey there! I don't read the intros very often, so only just saw this.

I've been skating with London Rollergirls for just over 5 years. Been vegan for over 6, I think. To be honest I can't remember which year I went vegan right now!

I don't post loads but sometimes post about derby. Which league do you skate with?

I skate with a newer league (I think just over a year or so old...) called the Aurora 88s in Aurora, Illinois. About an hour west of Chicago in the U.S. I'm slowly getting better, but I want to increase my training outside of practice so that I can improve quicker. I'm mostly played as a blocker, which I prefer. My agility is not good enough to be a jammer. We're ending our first travel season this August, and starting our home season again in the fall. We have three intra-league teams that play each other. I'm 39 and would like to get as good as I can before I'm too old to play derby. ;o)

I also am 39! I'm just over a month away from 40, and I'm the second oldest skater in the league and the oldest on our travel team charter squad. It can be a little challenging to compete with skaters in their 20s and early 30s--though I feel relatively fit I do know that being "older" can make it a bit harder for my body to recover and take the hits.

I have a training log on here that shows what I do to support my derby training: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=23653. You should start one, too! I'm not amazingly good at keeping it up to date, but I try.

Thank you so much for sharing that with me! Reading your training log is very helpful AND inspiring! I'm going to start one myself, even if it's just in a notebook at home. Keeping track like this will help me stay accountable. :o)
