fredrikw, I guess I'm a bit picky about the style I want. I want to avoid white, pink and pastel colours and I like the style of skate shoes like etnies, vans etc. I also want something that looks like suede and has plenty of support - I can't stand converse canvas shoes and the like... I'm after black or brown shoes really. GUess that kind of limits my options.

yeah, that's understandable, I just thought you were looking for running shoes.

my old pair of etnies are synthetic, and I do believe that there should still be a good selection of synthetic skate shoes, even though many have leather.

hey, I think this has been discussed elsewhere on the board as well, try the search and you'll hopefully find some more options.

I really hope you're not serious about getting a pair of leather shoes if you can't find a synthetic one.

try TK Maxx, Spike they always have etnies etc stuff at a reduced price, it's luck of the draw and you need to forage a bit but I generally come out of there with a pair of trainers if I'm looking.

GoLite

Postby osric » Tue Sep 25, 2007 2:14 pm

I recently discovered GoLite's line of shoes, which are made by Timberland. They are not cheap, but I just snagged a couple of last season's Sun Dragon design for about USD$50 a pair.

I like these shoes because:
1) they are made for trail running so they have great stability;
2) they are super breathable (and my feet need that!);
3) they are really lightweight, and since I wear an 11 my sneakers are the heaviest thing in my bag.

My email inquiry to GoLite's customer support assured me that all of their products are made with synthetics and no animal products. In the US you can find the shoes at REI, EMS, and other outdoor sports shops.

Does anyone know anything about this brand of trainer:

I've seen them advertised in the Ultrafit (UK) magazine a fair bit and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of using them?

I ordered a pair of these in "classic black" and they arrived this morning - their claims of being incredibly comfortable are true! Not so sure about wearing them in winter though.
They are much daintier than I expected - when I opened the package I was a bit disappointed TBH, but once I put them on are wore them round the house for a bit I changed my mind!
I haven't tried wearing them outside yet.
I think they'd be great for taking on holiday as they fold up really tiny!

Isn't it just to check on the label? Thought it probably doesn't cover glues and so on.. But you will have a hard life trying to think about glues, lacquer, ..

This is the reply from Inov8, makers of fell and trail running shoes and gear:

"All of our running shoes are fully synthetic and use no animal derivatives anywhere. Only the Roclite 390 GTX boot uses some leather in the upper."

Some of these would probably make good everyday shoes as well.

I got some Merrells recently, think the precise name of them is Chameleon Wrap Slam (whatever that means!). They're not for running as such, but are good for everyday on trails, pavement, grass or whatever.

I had some luck in TK Maxx the other day, got some vegan Adio skate shoes. Seems like they've tidied up the shoe section a bit and most of the Vans actually had labrls saying what they were made from. £25 insttead of £50 8)

if you like vans they actually do some models that are suitable for vegans, just need to be careful at the materials used for the sort you like :)

i am kind of hooked on the macbeth stuff at the moment although those i want are sold out on vegan essentials *cries*

good luck though!
