I think his focus is also on quality calories - ones that are easily absorbed (rather than hard-to-digest foods..)
If your body is working hard to digest your meal, you're obviously burning calories... But if you can eat less, and it digests quickly and easily, then i'm pretty sure a balance can occur.
Case in point - Brendan won a 50km Ultra Marathon back in May, i believe he ate a Vega bar 45mins before start, and then raced for 3hrs..and didn't eat anything during the run.
No freakin' way i could race for 3hrs and not be eating constantly! No idea what's going on with him tho, quite a feat, imo..
