Misleading non-vegan product award - omega3 soycheese?

Postby jpowell » Thu Mar 08, 2012 6:11 am

OK, despite my previously mentioned aversion to soya products, there is a time when I am inclined to seek them out: if I need convenience food from the supermarket immediately after training, and I am not prepared with protein powder

Being in such a situation the other night, Omega3 soy cheese caught my eye (didn't notice the brand, but there was only one brand of it, and I have noticed since it is sold in both major supermarket chains in Australia).

Ingredients (small print on the back of the package): 70% canola oil, 18% casein (dairy protein) - their note

So basically, this apparently vegan friendly trendy expensive health food is neither vegan nor especially healthy. It is cooking oil diluted with cows' milk - and not even a type of cooking oil that is particularly nutritious or that I would use on the rare occasions I still cook with oil.

In any case... main point.... surely SOY CHEESE could be expected to be mainly SOY, not DAIRY???????!?!

Ha ha mis-leadingly named products :) There has to be more of them out there. All I can think of is Jaffa Cakes - are they really biscuits?

I think the fact it's not vegan is a shame - guess there's a few products out there that flog themselves on "health" ie soy is healthier than dairy as opposed to flogging itself as being cruelty free.

I've just had a bowl of cluster type cereal that you think would be healthy but it's whacked full of sugar (35%) and fat (20%)

I would say half of the 'non-dairy' cheeses here in the US are not vegan. Casein helps the 'melting' that vegan cheese lovers have been seeking for. Meh, just buy Daiya :D

If it goes softer when you leave it out of the packet, it's a biscuit. If it goes harder, it's a cake. Try leaving the sponge part of a Jaffa Cake exposed to the air for a while and see whether it goes harder or softer.

They baked a full cake size one once to prove to the British tax authorities that it was a cake (and hence was not liable to VAT) and not a biscuit (on which VAT is payable)

They are in fact, cakes.

Thanks for the cake vs biscuit description :) A good one to use.

Talking of Jaffa Cakes - Can you get vegan Jaffa cakes? I love(d) Jaffa Cakes to the point I had to watch how many I bought as they get eaten in a day!

There was a pizza restaurant where I used to live that brought out a range of pizzas with non-dairy cheese toppings. I got so excited about it because their adverting made the pizzas look amazing. They used slogans such as 'Best Vegan Pizzas in London', which really had me excited about trying one.

However, when I checked their small print, it stated that all pizza bases are made with 15% milk, which 'cannot be altered because they are pre-made'. WTF?!?!

So who exactly were these pizzas aimed at? Vegans who cannot actually eat them because there's milk in the base, or lacto-intollerant people who also cannot eat them because of their allergies? I never got round to doing it, but I felt like phoning them up and asking them who exactly they were catering for with these new pizzas. The only consumer who would be interested is perhaps those that want a pizza but with less cholesterol/fat, but then I would assume that this market would be too small to really make an effort.
Please check out my blog, and my latest ramblings on milk, soap and glory and animal testing, Thanks!
