Mixing Protein Powders

Postby VegRugby » Tue Oct 11, 2011 7:43 pm

I read something in Men's Health about mixing multiple protein powders to maximize gain, ie whey and casein.

As a vegan, I've only ever taken soy protein isolate from TP. Does anyone mix like soy and gemma pea for a better gain than just soy? Common sense tells me to stay with soy because it has 1 g protein more per serving. Any advice? Works cited would be nice, too.

Thanks.

There's a stickied thread over at VBB where someone compared all vegan powders against whey and the best combination he found was 70% pea with 30% rice.

Vegimator, do you have a link?

I'm a poor college kid. I can't afford hemp.

That is a cool thread, but what is the point of trying to match the profile of whey, it isn't that whey is the ultimate protein source.

At the end of the day I reckon the more tasty and drinkable the protein is, the more likely you are to drink it and therefore the more likely you are to make gains.

Pea and rice sounds horrible. I'll stick to rice, which is bad enough by itself.

I did a little bit of side research (if you can call a Google search that) and found several sources that claimed soy protein isolate is a carcinogen. Help.

Somewhat tangentially, a lot of people, myself included, avoid soy protein powder simply because we end up eating so much soy anyway.

there are plenty of other protein powders as I'm sure you know :)

i save soy as my fast food/convenience/treat option rather than part of the regular diet

I did a bit of research and found that the Queen of England is a lizard from space. I decided not to worry about it until the government release an edict saying she can eat my brains with a fortnights notice.

On a more sensible note, Soy has one of the highest PDCAAS protein quality scores of all plant based powders that aren't ridiculously expensive, and loads more Glutamine than whey, so sticking to it is a fairly good bet. On the other hand, pea has quite a slug of BCAAs apparently, and is often cheaper than Soy, so might save you a bob or two to blend some of that in, and maybe have some perks...

Worth a try, report back if you find something that really works eh?

I will. Next order I place will probably be 50/50 soy/gemma pea.

some companies used whey and casein protein blends because they are Crappy supplements as dairy production waste products-

I mix hemp, rice, pea etc and alternate protein supplements over the year/monthly
