Buying in bulk - help needed

Postby purple_mog » Tue Dec 01, 2009 11:52 am

okaaaaaay - I'm totally happy with the way I'm eating these days and the dogs are now on homecooked dinners too, so I'm looking to start buying in more bulk to reduce shopping trips and cut costs. I know of Suma but they won't sell to me *pout* and the local healthfood shops sell things in silly small packets..

where do you buy in bulk from? I'm hoping to find a decent online retailer to buy pulses, rice, couscous etc from.

we use lembas on a weekly basis for our online shop.

They also have a place to do drop in visits, if you cant get the minumum order together.

I think you need some kind of food co-op or a company though to order?

I may be able to do a bulk order with Lembas via a friend who has an account, though it does mean driving to Manchester to collect my shopping

Am going to compare prices with these guys who seem to sell almost everything I would need http://www.naturallygoodfood.co.uk/index.php

Used these guys in 2006. Minimum order of £600 to get it delivered.

Food arrived by the pallet.

Still eating it.

PS: Don't make my mistake of asking for a "big" bag of lentils. You'll need JP to shift the bastard. And to eat it.

Wholesalers get a lot of complaints from shops who feel they lose custom if individuals get orders delivered. They state a minimum order to get around that, and to make it worth their while, admin wise.

Why not ask your local shop if you can add things like 12 packs of soya milk and sacks of rice onto their order, pay the day before and make sure you collect on day of delivery? They might help you out.

Alternatively, why not drive over to Suma in Halifax with a made-up company card (they don't look too closely) and shop in person? The minimum order is much less if you collect.

  I wasn't thinking of an order just that big.....has JP finished all the lentils??

Excellent suggestion Fox - I actually have a company card for real though it is for dog training

I really do understand the support your local shop thing, but they just don't sell things in bulk which is how I want to buy them, not lots of silly little plastic wrapped packets. Take soy mince, which I use for me and feeding the dogs, but the little packs they sell it in only last less than a week *sigh*

bumping this as I'm looking to do some bulk buying myself

http://www.naturallygoodfood.co.uk/Bulk_Nuts?type=pd_bulk which was suggested still looks good. Free shipping is fairly easy to get too.

Edited to add: Okay not cheap. Daaaaaamn even at 20kg their organic brazil nuts are more expensive per kg than broken non organic brazil nuts from Real Foods (when buying just 1 kg!).

Anyone have any better stores though?

I have to register with Lembas just to see the prices which is bizarre  so honestly can't be bothered.

edited to add: found http://www.buywholefoodsonline.co.uk/ which is a little cheaper than real foods
