spirulina shelf life

Postby MikayP » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:01 pm

anyone know how long a good size tub of spirulina would last? it would make more sense for me financially to buy a bigger $60-$70 size tub of the powder than the smaller $20. but if the quality goes down fast over time ill stick with the smaller more expensive versions. i only would use about a tablespoon or so a day

the contents can oxidise, like beta carotene can reduce over storage time, and other antioxidants. But really it depends on how you store it: amber glass first, clear glass second, plastic tub third, plastic bag last. Reduce light, heat (some debate on this as spirulina is said to withstand quite a lot of heat) and air entry. Then storing large quantites should be fine, and it will save you a heck of a lot of money!

Spirulina is pretty stable, ask the vendor your buying it from. The batch we have in currently is expires December 2012 so quite a while away and has been said keep it stored properly i.e away from heat, sunlight etc.
